why shop vintage/thrift? because you can stumble on amazing finds and avoid the retail guilt. i found this christian dior jeune homme coat for $20 and a j. crew coat for $30. they're both perfectly masculin feminin and a great alternative to buying something from apc or la garconne moderne - but without the high price tag. the blouse i'm wearing today? i found it while i was thrifting with caylee (if you seek style) in aurora, illinois for $4. that's why i love thrift shopping so much - although you have to sift through some of the weird 90s strappy camis and turtlenecks and ugly christmas sweaters, you can find classic pieces that are made with high quality fabrics that you just can't find in stores these days.

some upcoming events in minneapolis where you can get your thrift on:
1. mighty swell - created by bloggers/vintage lovers meghan mcandrews and rae danneman, this pop up boutique is packed with goodies from vintage vendors. it'll be open the next 4 saturdays, starting this saturday (november 26) through december 17 from 9 am to 5 pm. if you can make it to one, put december 10 on your calendar: the gals will be handing out handmade recipe books full of their favorite holiday recipes, as well as other door prizes and giveaways from vintage vendors and local businesses. mighty swell is located at 3109 east 42nd street in south minneapolis.

2. junk love - if you can't wait for mighty swell's pop up on saturday, head to st. paul. open from 12-9, junk love features 7 special vendors, including a newly formed trio called "band of thrifters" which will debut their pop-up store in spring 2012. junk love is located at 2258 university avenue in st. paul.

i've never been to a joynoelle show before, but thanks to mary o'regan (art of wore) who was kind enough to extend an invite, i attended my first show of her's last night at grand cafe in south minneapolis, along with kitty cotten, kara nesvig, and ellen of the minneapoline. the grand cafe itself is an intimate venue aside from being the location for this show - chairs lined one of the hallways and wrapped around to the front of the cafe. i'd only known joynoelle's work from a few bridal editorials i've seen, and it was breathtaking to see these dresses walk by in person. loved the silhouettes of the dresses, loved the interpretation of "the caged bird" throughout her collection, wasn't particularly fond of the birds on the dresses... but i definitely know a handful of girls who would love to get their hands on one of those dresses. my favorites? the structured "cage" dresses, which reminded me of structured lines in a few dresses from christopher kane fall 2009. wish this hadn't been my first time at one of her shows, but i can definitely say that it won't be my last.

after the show, we walked over to her boutique and atelier a few blocks down from the cafe. and of course, her boutique is beautifully decorated - i think i can let the photos speak for themselves.

has it really been a month? it's hard for me to believe. work has barely left me time to think, let alone sleep, so i haven't been doing a lot of shooting lately. i was sent to chicago for two weeks and just returned last sunday, so let's just blame it on that. meanwhile, if you don't already follow my tumblr, i tend to update that more often than this blog. it's filled with images from editorials i like, artists i admire, and other pretty little things i like to save. lately i've been trying to draw some winter/cold inspiration from tumblr - heavy knits, layering, wool coats... things to remind me that winter doesn't have to be considered as that dreadful and miserable time of the year.

LITTLE BLACK DRESS

while MNFW is nowhere near anything like NYFW, there were still some great events and shows to see. my favorite event during MNFW: "little black dress." "little black dress" celebrated the coveted LBD, a must-have in any woman's wardrobe. there were two runway segments: one included personal designs from each designer, and the other, a designer's take on the LBD. my favorites? it's hard to pick, especially because i love wearing black dresses. emma berg's lbd was beautiful... the cut-out on raul's lbd was sexy but "classy," as i'm sure he'd say... plunging lace lbd from george moskal was incredible. i can't ignore nicole larson's designs - i think everyone in the crowd was taken aback by the red dress. i haven't seen her work before but i look forward to seeing more in the future.

all in all, beautiful crowd and a beautiful event. congratulations to everyone involved, especially the designers, haus salon, and vision model management. it's events like these that truly bring out the best in the MNfashion community.

last thursday, i attended the vanessa zahid collection launch party featuring jewelry from vanessa zahid and clothing designed by gina marie vintage. vanessa and i had collaborated on her lookbook (published on issuu) back in august, so i had a sneak peek of some of her pieces before the show. i loved the way the jewelry and clothing worked well together in terms of styling, very simple and elegant, well presented on the runway. definitely hope to see more from gina marie vintage in the local fashion scene - i love sheer neutrals. congratulations to both designers!

NYFW PT 2: RA'MON LAWRENCE AT HAPPY MONKEY

apologies for the overdue follow up to my previous post. ra'mon's presentation was on saturday at happy monkey in manhattan's fashion district, and the entire day had flew by in a second. i shot the lookbook in a few hours blocked off before doors opened for the presentation, while kara mostly prepped models in their looks. all jewelry was by rox, another minneapolis local who collaborated with ra'mon for the show. big thanks to all the volunteers who helped out at the show, as well as everyone involved in production and press.

the lookbook is currently in the editing process, so keep an eye out for its release.

NYFW PT 1: FASHIONS NIGHT OUT

we flew into NYC and landed around 10 am. instead of taking a car to downtown manhattan, we decided to take the subway. let's just say, we won't be doing that again - hauling huge bags of shoes and accessories up and down the stairs wore us out. we met our friend brent for lunch so we could rest up and talk about the schedule for the remainder of our stay.

later that evening, we met up with some friends for ra'mon's fashion's night out event at STK rooftop, hosted by new york moves magazine. we saw a few project runway alums from past seasons, like carol hannah and althea harper, both from the same season as ra'mon (season 6). after that party wrapped, we walked around the meatpacking district (so many events!) and wound up at diane von furstenberg. a few major names who appeared at DVF: kelly cutrone of people's revolution, diane von furstenberg (!), and anna wintour (!!!).

as my first fashion's night out, this one's going to be hard to beat.

this past sunday, i went to visit my good friends jess and kait, the duo behind feathers, oh my!, at the annual caffetto arts & crafts fair in uptown. see that huge headpiece in the second photo? it's probably one of my favorites. but there's plenty of simple everyday feather accessories that are really affordable (around $4 a piece). hopefully, jess and kait will launch their etsy site soon, but in the meantime you can find their pieces at design collective and gallery 360.

me and kait had the day off, so we walked down to millenium park and happened to stop by yolk for brunch. it was recommended to me by a coworker, and it's totally worth stopping by - great prices and great selection to choose from. i was originally going to order the french toast, but i wound up with the cajun shroom scrambler (topped with a huge portabella mushroom) and kait ordered the crepes combo. after brunch, we headed to the bean in millenium park. it's the only tourist-y thing i haven't ever visited in chicago.

it's been a busy few weeks. work has been hectic, and now i'm leaving for chicago next sunday for six weeks for training. can't say i'll miss the 40 degree weather and the occasional flurries here in minneapolis. i think i'm going to require a break from minneapolis every few months. this chicago trip has come just in time.

NYC: PHOTO DIARY

my weekend in NYC was the perfect escape from the midwest. when i left on friday, it snowed later that night in minneapolis. i stayed with my friends in bed stuy, and we ate a lot of good food while i was there: brunched at juliette's, sipped on bloody mary's at project parlor, and dined at bonchon. okay, and we had some delicious pizza delivery saturday night while watching burlesque since it was raining like crazy. we went shopping in soho, which was very overwhelming for me. i also got to hit the oak sale on its second day: not much left, but i managed to find a sweater.

i'd been to new york city many times before when i was kid, about 10 years ago. i think this trip helps me realize that i'm not as tied to minneapolis as i thought i was. i'm putting NYC on my list of cities i'm considering moving to.

with 50 degree weather forecasted in a week, i'm prepping my clothes rack (yes, i have serious closet overflow) with some of my favorite spring garments, as well some new items i've picked up in the past few days. i usually stick to light neutrals, stripes, and florals. thanks to a little retail therapy this afternoon after brunch with some friends, i've added these things to my new spring wardrobe: chambray rag & bone button-up shirt, black lace shorts, and twenty8twelve grey pocket zipper sweatshirt. and i finally found a boyfriend-style watch that is perfect for work that doesn't look too plain. retail therapy doesn't always mean splurging on expensive clothes - in my case, i didn't spend more than $150 today on those new spring items and a few other things. i'm ready for spring, so bring on the warm weather.

last night, i attended "distortion", the u of m senior fashion show. unfortunately, i showed up a little late and missed the sophomore exhibition (yikes!) but managed to catch the rest of the show. i've posted a few of my favorite looks from the show. the first two are from junior designers jennifer robertus and dziyana zhyhar. i'm looking forward to what they'll show next year. i loved the menswear designs by kelly ver duin: leather, hardware, and buckles. and the dress everyone fell in love with, including me, was designed by leslie randall. lingerie had its place in the show designed by alix nettnay - surprising, but beautifully designed. as for styling, i loved the hair and makeup for laura henslin - simple, clean, and perfect for spring. it's great to see fresh faces in the minneapolis local fashion scene. new people bring new ideas. at the end of the show, it was announced that looks showcased in the show will be sold online. i wonder how many people will be after leslie randall's dress...

pretending it's not 25º outside isn't so hard in our sun room, but i'm happy that we're back up to double-digit weather in minneapolis. the sun room is at least 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house, so just wearing a cropped tee and shorts isn't as silly as it sounds. my cat, isa, loves lounging in here with me. sunlight on a friday afternoon? yeah, it feels good.

this might be the closest i'll get to an outfit post. i'm not really good at posing with my entire body, i leave that up to models. i'm really just impatient and i've yet to buy a remote for my camera (self-timer isn't very glam). today, i wore my favorite thrift find from dallas - this sweatshirt with ironed-on appliques and some added little southwestern flair: cow skull? some feathers? i'm not really sure how else to describe it, but it's really cool and glittery. i've had people come up to me and ask where i get it from, and it's surprising how disappointed people look when i tell them it's thrifted or one-of-a-kind.

in attempts to condense my closet a few days ago, i took almost everything i haven't worn in a month and brought it to buffalo exchange and everyday people. i wound up finding this free people denim moto jacket that's a little too big, but that's ok. i like things to fit bigger instead of something fitting too small.

it's been a while since i've updated, but i've been a little tied up the past two weeks. i've been searching for a new apartment (and trying to find a subleaser for my room), which is a very tiring search. i also worked on two shoots that will release in the next month or so: one for MNfashion and the second, for maritza ramirez' collection for cliché's "avoid the grey" fashion show this weekend. pictured above is peter of spinario design and gallery, located in northeast minneapolis, where we shot maritza's collection this past weekend. beautiful and unique pieces in the store - wish i had to money to take a few of them home with me.

and now, for some good news: i'll be headed to coachella 2011 this year, and i was lucky enough to buy my ticket before they sold out. phew! can't wait to go, this year's lineup is definitely worth it.

i knew i wanted this faux fur jacket from urban outfitters when i first saw it, and luckily, i snatched it while it was on sale. a few months back, i wanted to buy a similar version from mango but it sold out. i don't normally go for faux fur but i love this jacket! thanks to a coworker, i've nicknamed it "black swan." i think the name fits well.

i saw a flannel fringe jacket featured recently on oracle fox, and i knew. i would love wherever or whoever made this. flannel's s/s 2011 collection reminds me of céline s/s 2010 (in terms of color and structure), but with a slight touch of airiness and femininity. but why do i need to get into the specifics? just look. let's pretend i can afford the rabbit fur jacket they're selling online, but i'll settle for a simple dress or scarf (already added to my wishlist).

i've been back in minneapolis for a week now. though i'm glad i'm back home, i miss dallas. i'm not one who usually writes up new years resolutions for myself, but this year's different: i'm not in school anymore. pulled from my tumblr, here's a glimpse into what i'd like to accomplish for this new year:

PHOTO // i look at the work of young artists (16 year olds), and i’m jealous of their talent. i’ve lost most of my creative drive since college graduation. it’s time to get more creative with my photo work. i’d like to jump back into film: more specifically, i’d like to start working with medium format. i admit, i may have been worn out by photo requests and work i’ve done. here’s to a new year of photo work that i’ll be shooting on my own terms. i need to remind myself that pushing boundaries is the only way i’ll be able to grow.

PLACE // this not only speaks to where i live, but where i am in life. no longer can i consider myself a “recent graduate,” it’s been almost a year since. i see myself in minneapolis for maybe another year: after that, it’ll be time to jump ship. traveling to dallas may have been the highlight of 2010: it taught me that collaborative creative communities exist everywhere - minneapolis/st. paul just happens to have a very strong community. in the next year, i hope to find a place i can move to and live outside of this minneapolis mindset i’ve grown up with, and with that, i hope to solidify the place i find myself as i go from 22 to 23.

here's to 2011, folks!

XMAS @ CRÙ WINE BAR

spending christmas in dallas wasn't so bad, but it was hard to find a place to settle on (i should've started my search earlier in the week). luckily, i found something quickly - crù wine bar in the west village. i had an amazing three-course meal (for only $35!) with my friend tyra. we both had a red wine flight called "italian stallion" - i'm a sucker for reds.

and my three-course choices:
appetizer: chicken & shrimp potstickers
entrée: seared sea scallops with tomato basil risotto
dessert: crème brulée

this is probably the most expensive dinner i've ever spent on myself, but it was worth it. good food, good company.

SUNDAY PHOTO DIARY

i've been lucky enough to have my days off grouped together: i was off this past thursday, friday & sunday. a few of us coworkers met up for brunch on sunday and shared some stories (and passed around some pictures) from the night before. my friend tyra and i spotted cibus on our first day in dallas. we remembered it for this sole reason: bottomless mimosas and bellinis. yum. i ordered the eggs al forno and was not disappointed. the sausage was delicious!

after brunch, we headed to clothes circuit. but, we were lured into sprinkles cupcakes. tyra is gluten-free, and it was a surprise that they served gluten-free cupcakes. her verdict: best gluten-free red velvet cupcake ever. i bought a vanilla and red velvet cupcake - so good! hope i make it back before i leave.

i've yet to make a "night out in dallas" post.. that'll come soon enough - a few of my coworkers will be leaving on wednesday and we'll make sure to have a proper send-off for them! stay tuned for those photos...

i found svpply before i heard about boutiques.com, and for the time being, i'm sticking with svpply. boutiques.com seems limiting, only allowing you to peruse through clothing and shop designer and celebrity boutiques; however, boutiques.com is more fashion and designer focused.

svpply is "a collection of the products you love," including home decor, clothing, accessories, and media. it's quite simple: by adding a bookmark link to your browser, you can add products to your svpply with a click of button as you browse other sites. it helps me keep track of things that i like and things that i'd like to buy. i like finding quirky and unique little things i wouldn't normally find online through other svpply members. i wouldn't be blogging about this if i didn't believe in it. it's a great site.

i'm trying to get a taste of the local fashion scene here, and i came across tetanus jewelry via independent artists. tetanus is based in dallas, and they've previously been featured on sea of shoes. there are some really beautiful pieces that are very well priced - i think my favorites are between the amethyst pendants and the tusk jewelry. the photo featured above - the resurrected necropolis charm - will most likely be my first purchase though... i absolutely love the detailing on the pyramid.

i've made it to dallas, safe and sound. we landed early this morning, around 9:30 AM, and had a chance to wander around northpark mall. my jaw dropped when i saw all the different stores in the mall (my friend can attest to this, i kept repeating "oh my god they have a ______ here! wow!"). i think my biggest potential weaknesses will be barneys, anthropologie, and henri bendel, which is right across from where i'll be working. i'm really excited about all of this (and a little bit nervous)! my room is really nice, equipped with a kitchen and high speed internet... couldn't ask for more. well, if only i could get my hands on some food/groceries... (watching the food network most of the afternoon has not been helpful, believe it or not.)

a few coworkers and i drove out to chicago friday night for the h&m x lanvin launch the next morning. we stood in line from 3:30 AM and wound up being group 4 (within the first 100) to shop the collection. i was surprised with the quality of some of the dresses, and not-so-thrilled with the quality of other items. the sunglasses sold out before i could get to them, but i managed to grab three lipsticks. i changed my mind about buying the black patent heels from the collection, and i don't regret it - i found these leopard platform heels at zara! i loved these brown ankle boots from h&m and debated whether or not i wanted to buy them before getting a chance to see the h&m x lanvin collection. once i decided against the heels, i went with these instead. i love that they're simple, and that i'll be able to wear them here and in texas.

that's right, i'm headed to dallas for the h&m pop up store opening in december. i fly out december 5, and i'll be back before the end of the month. i'm really excited to be a part of this! and of course, i'm excited to escape the minnesota winter for a month. not to worry, i'll have photo updates while i'm there.

over the weekend, my friend john and i drove out to milwaukee to visit our friend brent and see his danceworks performance in "lying." (photos from the performance will be posted on my photo blog.) the next day, we walked into the riverview antique market. i wound up finding this vintage christian dior blouse in beautiful condition - i'd say, this is one of my best finds. i'm already dying to go back... if you find yourself in downtown milwaukee, make SURE you stop in.

i said goodbye to northeast minneapolis and made the move to uptown earlier this week. i'm living on top of a hill in a house which requires everyone to climb the exhausting staircase to the front door (my legs are still burning from going up and down the stairs while i was moving). my favorite room in this house, by far, is the sun room. it's very relaxing and soothing to be in.

these black wedge booties came in at h&m about two weeks ago. at $49.95, i think they're a pretty good alternative to the jeffrey campbell version. but i have to be honest: don't wear these for a 9 hour work shift. my feet are crying.
